Ask For These Things For Free During Your Next Hotel Visit

Posted on

If you visit hotels enough, you might occasionally find yourself getting offered a free room upgrade, which can instantly improve the enjoyment of your visit. What you might not know, however, is that there are many different things at hotels that typically have a price, but that you can get for free — just by asking. It's poor etiquette to approach the front desk with a long list of things that you want without having to pay for them, but as long as you're polite and don't ask for too much, it's reasonable to expect that you can get the following things for free during your next hotel visit.

Basic Toiletries

The frustration you experience when you're getting ready for bed and realize that you forgot to pack your toothbrush can be quickly reversed if you know that you can get a free toothbrush at the front desk — just by asking. Many hotels have a selection of basic toiletries, beyond those offered in the rooms, that guests can have access to. These items aren't always advertised, but you shouldn't have trouble getting something for free. Beyond toothbrushes, other items that you can often get include toothpaste, disposable razors, shaving foam and dental floss.

Kids' Activities

If you're traveling with children and bad weather has sabotaged your planned outings for the day, you may find yourself struggling to keep the kids entertained at the hotel. In many cases, you'll need to look no further than making some requests at the hotel's front desk. Many properties will loan activities for kids, including board games, books and even video game systems. If the hotel has a covered tennis court or basketball net, you just have to visit the front desk to pick up the necessary sports accessories for these activities, too.

Shuttle Service

If the hotel has a shuttle parked out front, it may typically take hotel guests to and from the airport. However, if you're visiting the hotel and don't have a car, there's no harm in asking for a short ride elsewhere, as long as the shuttle isn't currently in use. Instead of calling a cab, you can often ride the shuttle — for free — to area restaurants, shopping centers and tourist attractions.

Workout Gear

Want to work out in the hotel's gym but forgot your athletic attire? No worries. Many higher-end hotels will loan workout gear to their guests. Basic athletic apparel, including running shoes, is often available at such properties for guests who want to stay active, whether it's using one of the cardio machines in the gym or taking a run on a running path nearby.
